2020: Ula Lucińska, Michał Knychaus: PORTFOLIO

"During our residency we would like to work on the new series of sculptural objects. It is important for us to investigate the associations and meanings attributed to certain materials. Through the material research we would mostly like to focus on the phenomena of the time oriented disintegration and the specific moment of "suspension" that becomes a new form of existence. The process of collapse and mutation of matter has a lot of strong and similar aspects to the current moment in time, which could be symbolized by a sense of threat, uncertainty and ecological loss.

 

We will continue working with different materials, building assemblages of glass, frigid metal shapes, raw scattered textiles, carved, bizarre shaped wood and different found items. We will be particularly interested in stopping the burning process of wood and preserving it when it still holds its shape but also has clear traces of decay."

Ula Lucińska (b. 1992, PL) and Michał Knychaus (b. 1987, PL) work together as the Inside Job duo. Their practice is based on the use of different mediums and materials, which often leads to the creation of specific, multi-layered environments. They focus on the processes of how identities are constructed, including the identities of places, within the context of dynamic changes such as: the climate crisis, technological acceleration, political shifts and growing anxiety about the unknown future. Many of their projects refer to futuristic and post-catastrophic scenarios. Combining experiences from various fields, they develop their practice not only in the field of visual art, but also as active researchers. They focus on the issues of recognition of places and their future aesthetics, understanding it as a cultural mediation of wider, social, economic and political processes organizing life.

 

They have presented works during art residencies (Residency Gurzelen, Biel/Bienne, CH; TestDrive, Nicosia, CY; Kulturfabrik, Burgdorf, CH), at individual exhibitions (e.g. the CAVE Gallery, Wrocław, PL; Pawilon, Poznań, PL; :SKALA, Poznań, PL; 9/10 Gallery, PL, Poland; Hot Wheels Projects, Athens, GR) and collective ones (e.g. Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, DE; BWA Wrocław, PL; TRAFO - Trafostacja Sztuki, Szczecin, PL; The Death of Man, Warsaw Gallery Weekend, PL; WallRiss, Fribourg, CH; Sattlekammer, Bern, CH; the Athens Digital Arts Festival 2018, Athens, GR; DuflonRacz, Bern, CH; the Ostrale Biennale of Contemporary Arts, Dresden, DE; Musrara Mix Festival, Jerusalem, IL).
